High-Containment Solutions for Antidiabetic Drug Processing

Servolift developed a fully integrated high-containment system for AstraZeneca to ensure safe and efficient processing of an antidiabetic drug. The solution covers homogenization, particle size reduction, and dosing within a closed, dust-free environment.

 


Key Challenge

Before compacting powder, achieving the correct particle size is critical. Our system combines controlled milling and dosing in a gravity-fed configuration known as a Milling Stack, ensuring maximum containment and operator safety.
 

Process Highlights

  • Closed System Design:
    Utilizes Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) and High-Containment Split Butterfly Valves (SBVs) for dust-tight connections.
  • Step-by-Step Workflow:
    1. Source IBC Preparation: Raw material in IBC.A is lifted above the mill using a hoist column.
    2. Upper Containment Connection: Passive SBV on IBC.A docks with Active SBV at the mill inlet for a sealed transfer.
    3. Milling & Dosing: Material flows by gravity into the cone mill, where particle size is reduced and dosing is controlled via an integrated rotary valve.
    4. Lower Containment Connection: Milled product exits through a second SBV set into IBC.B.
    5. Dust-Free Disconnection: SBVs close, lock, and allow safe removal of IBCs for the next process step (e.g., blending).
  • Integrated Safety:
    All components—hoist, mill, SBVs—are interlocked for synchronized operation and maximum containment.
